The Sutra of Gandhi's Time Periods


    Prostrate myself before the Blessed Young Manjushri!
    So I heard once.

    The Blessed One was in the hard place of Kalan, the Bamboo Grove at Rajagriha.
    Then the Blessed One called the monks and said:
    Monks! Hear the good things that are explained as the time of years for monks!
    Monks! In the first half of the first month of winter appears the time of Gandhi [duration] of seven measures. But it is not the time of five and a half measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [duration] of eight measures. But it is not the time of six measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the middle month of winter is the time of Gandhi [duration] of nine measures. But it is not the time of seven measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [of duration] is ten measures. But it is not the time of eight measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the last month of winter is the time of Gandhi [duration] of eleven measures. But it is not the time of nine measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [of duration] is twelve measures. But it is not the time of ten measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the first month of spring appears the time of Gandhi [duration] of eleven measures. But it is not the time of nine measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [lasting] ten measures. But it is not the time of eight measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the middle month of spring is the time of Gandhi [duration] of nine measures. But it is not the time of seven measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [lasting] eight measures. But it is not the time of six measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the last month of spring appears the time of Gandhi [duration] of seven measures. But it is not the time of five measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [with duration] of six measures. But it is not the time of four measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the first month of summer there is the time of Gandhi [duration] of six measures. But it is not the time in four measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [with duration] of five measures. But it is not the time of three measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the middle month of summer is the time of Gandhi [duration] of four measures. But it is not the time of three measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [duration] is four measures. But it is not the time of two measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    In the first half of the last month of summer there is the time of Gandhi [duration] of three measures. But it is not the time in two measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [with duration] of three measures. But it is not the time in two measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the first half of the first month of autumn is the time of Gandhi [duration] of three measures. But it is not the time of one and a half measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi time [duration] of two measures. But it is not the time in half measure, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the first half of the middle month of autumn is the time of Gandhi [duration] in four measures. But it is not the time of two measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi time [with duration] of four measures. But it is not the time in two measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the first half of the last month of autumn is the time of Gandhi [duration] of five measures. But it is not the time of three measures, which is less by [a certain] value.
    In the second half of the month Gandhi's time [with duration] of six measures. But it is not the time of four measures, which is less by [a certain] amount.
    The Blessed One said so. Then those monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
    Thus concludes the Noble [teaching], the sutra of the Gandhi seasons.

PS: rkang pa — the base, the measure, the foot. Corresponds to pada in Sanskrit. The word measure is used in the text because the base corresponds to the period of the passage of the two nakshatras.
sor – finger, width. According to the text, represents a value equal to four nakshatras. A neutral term was used in the translation of the text.
