Sutra on Impermanence
I prostrate before all the Enlightened Ones and Bodhisattvas!
So I heard it once.
The Blessed One was in the pleasant park of Anathapindada, Jetavana Garden in Shravasti, along with a large benevolent assembly of monks. Then the Blessed One said the following to the monks:
Monks! These four phenomena are pleasant everywhere in the universe, stand out, appreciated, pleasing to the mind, really delight.
What are four?
Monks! Health is pleasant everywhere in the universe, stands out, appreciated, pleasant for the mind, really pleases. But the completion of this health is also a disease.
Monks! The disease is not pleasant anywhere in the universe, does not stand out, is not appreciated, unpleasant for the mind, in fact it does not please.
Monks! Youth is pleasant everywhere in the universe, stands out, appreciated, pleasant for the mind, really pleases. But the completion of this youth is also old age.
Monks! Old age is not pleasant anywhere in the universe, does not stand out, is not appreciated, is unpleasant for the mind, in fact it does not please.
Monks! Well-being is pleasant everywhere in the universe, stands out, appreciated, pleasant for the mind, really pleases. But the completion of this fortune is also decline.
Monks! Decline is not pleasant anywhere in the universe, does not stand out, is not appreciated, is unpleasant for the mind, in fact it does not please.
Monks! Life is pleasant everywhere in the universe, stands out, appreciated, pleasant for the mind, really pleases. But the completion of this life is also death.
Monks! Death is not pleasant anywhere in the universe, does not stand out, is not appreciated, is unpleasant for the mind, in fact it does not please.
The Blessed One said:
After this was said by Sugata, other teachers also spoke about it.
Health is not permanent, youth is not permanent. Well-being is not permanent, life is also not permanent. If a being is afflicted with impermanence, how can joy in desired qualities be generated?
The Blessed One said so. The monks rejoiced. Praised what the Blessed One said.
This concludes the sutra on impermanence.
