Sutra on the Essence of Impermanence

I prostrate before all the Enlightened Ones and Bodhisattvas!
    So I heard it once.

The Blessed One was in the pleasant park of Anathapindada, the Jetavana garden in Shravasti. Then the Blessed One said the following to the monks:
Monks! All composite is impermanent, not stable, not acceptable for the mind to posit, possesses the property of total variability.
Monks! Readily turn the mind away from all that is composite!
Monks! [Act] until there is passion, there is no attachment, there is no complete liberation!
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, whether it be all living beings, all elements, all living things. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living, whether it is the family of the householder, which is like the Sala tree, the Brahmin family, which is like the Sala tree, the king's family, which is like the tallow tree, that are rich, possess many jewels, [abide] in great pleasure, possess numerous jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, shankashila, corals, gold, silver, jewelry, wealth, possess collected cereals, jewels, gold, storehouses, treasuries, have food in the form of bitter [drinks], plants, cottage cheese and yogurt, have many friends, relatives, relatives. Having been born, they cannot help but die. In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as kings, ordained by the crown of the royal family, the rulers of the country, possessing power, who are victorious in the mandala of the great world. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as kings, ordained by the crown of the royal family, the rulers of the country, possessing power, who are victorious in the mandala of the great world. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the rishis who feed on grasses and fruits growing in the forests, live off fruits and grasses in the fields, live in the fields and eat fruits and grasses. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the gods of the abode of the four great kings, the gods [of heaven] of thirty-three [gods], [heaven] Aviha, Tushita, Nirmana-rati, Para-nirmita-vashavarti. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the gods of the sphere of forms who attained the first dhyana - [the gods of heaven] Brahmakayika, Brahma-purohita, Mahabrahman. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the gods who have reached the second dhyana - [heaven] Paritabha, Apramanabha, Prabhasvara. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living beings, such as the gods who have attained the third dhyana - [heaven] Paritta-subha, Apramana-subha, Subhakritsna. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the gods who have reached the fourth dhyana - the gods [of heaven] Anabhraka, Punyavridhi, Mahaphala, Asamjisattva, Avriha, Atapas, Sudarshana, Sudrisha, Akanishtha. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], death is the end for all living things, such as the gods of the sphere of lack of form - the gods that are near the sphere-ayatana Akasha-anantya, Vijnana-anantya, Akimchanya, Naiva-samjnana-asamjnana. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
In any [case], even the Arhats who devastated the pollution, performed all actions, did everything necessary, left the burden, achieved their own goal, completely depleted the connection with being, completely completely liberated the mind by the power of correct understanding, came to the other [shore to] holiness of all the faculties of the mind - have the property of dropping the body, which is pleasing to the mind.
In any [case], even the pratyekabuddhas, who are like a rhinoceros, who act in purity, have carried out submission to the only self, completely pacified the essence, made the essence [transition] to perfect nirvana - even they have the property of dropping the body, which is pleasant for the mind.
In any [case], even the Tathagata, the Arhat, the truly perfect Enlightened One, possessing ten powers, the power of four fearlessness does not possess fears, the greatest because of the face in the place of the supreme leader, who united stability and strength in the body without thirst, proclaiming everything true with a lion's roar - even he has the property of dropping the body, which is pleasing to the mind.
Monks! This is true. The potter makes the vessels. But they all collapse, whether he leaves them for safekeeping or not. And in the end, they will disappear.
Monks! Similarly, the land [of existence] of all living entities, all elements, life of all living beings is death. In the end, they will die. Having been born, they cannot help but die.
    The Blessed One said:
After this was said by Sugata, other teachers also spoke about it.
How wonderful! The compound is impermanent and has the property of occurrence and destruction. Having appeared, it is destroyed. Therefore, happiness is in complete peace. When something like this flares up with special [force], how can you act with joy? How can the mind be satisfied? [It is like] entering and being in darkness. Because of this, you will not find a lamp!
The Blessed One said so. The monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
This concludes the sutra on impermanence. Translated by Lama Karma Paljor (O. Filippov).
