The Noble [teaching]. The Sutra of the Four Truths
I praise all the Enlightened ones and bodhisattvas!
So I heard once.
The Blessed One was staying with a great blissful assembly of bhikshu monks, stopping in the evening at Dandin in the middle of a bamboo tree, in a royal place between Rajagriha and Pataliputra town.
Then the Blessed One addressed the monks:
Monks!
Since I and you have not understood these four Noble truths, have not seen them, have not brought them inside [the heart], have not analyzed each one, [we are] in cyclical existence and are moving along this long path.
What are the four?
Since I and you did not understand the noble truth of suffering, did not see, did not bring inside [the heart], did not analyze separately, [we are] in cyclical existence and move along this long path.
Since you and I did not understand the noble truth of the source of all suffering, did not see it, did not bring it inside [the heart], did not analyze it separately, [we are] in cyclical existence and move along this long path.
Since you and I did not understand the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, did not see it, did not bring it inside [the heart], did not analyze it separately, then [we are] in cyclical existence and move along this long path.
Since I and you have not understood the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, nor have you seen it, nor brought it within [the heart], nor analyzed it separately, then [we are] in cyclical existence and move along this long path.
Monks! I have comprehended the noble truth of suffering, I have analyzed. And because I have suppressed the thirst for being, I have suppressed the emergence of cyclical existence, and now there is no other thirst.
I have realized the noble truth of the origin of all suffering, I have analyzed. Because I have suppressed the thirst for being, I have suppressed the emergence of cyclical existence, and now there is no other thirst.
I have grasped the noble truth of suppressing suffering, analyzed. Because I have suppressed the thirst for being, I have suppressed the emergence of cyclical existence, and now there is no other thirst.
I have realized the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, analyzed. Because I have suppressed the thirst for being, I have suppressed the emergence of cyclical existence, and now there is no other thirst.
The blessed one said so. Sugata said so. The Guru also said so:
Because I and you have not seen the four truths of the Noble ones corresponding to such, have been in cyclical existence for a long time. Having seen these truths, suppressed the thirst for being. Because having done so - suppressed the emergence of cyclical existence - now there is no other longing.
The blessed one said so. The monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
Thus ends the noble [teaching], the sutra of the four truths.
