Clarifying the essence of the rosary

The cresset of the mantra

     Praise the Guru, Deva, Dakini! Hum!
     Lord, master-guru, the source and treasury of blessing! Devata, the source of sidhi and all that is desired! Ocean dakini, the lady of activity! I prostrate myself before the Three Roots!
     One who wants to enter the path of the secret mantra [should] strive to approach the mandala of the mantra. I will clearly describe the essence of the rosary, for the sake of eliminating extremes for achievements.
     Here [the following points are present]: the nature of the rosary, definition, divisions, enumeration, necessity, and heartfelt obligations. Everything is described by means of six points corresponding to these.

     1. The nature [or essence] of the rosary
     It is indicated mainly in the transmission line, enumerations, is compiled in the form of [description] decorations and is shown in explanations. Also explained as the essence of the rosary and what relates to the approximation, the maintenance of dimensions [in the account], etc.

     2. Defining the rosary
     The higher men of faith use the rosary and the mind to pray and fix [their mind] on the teacher-guru. In order to generate zeal in practice, [use] the rosary and the mind [in contemplation] of the devata. Desiring to be diligent in that which corresponds to the mode of approach and to transform [everything] in contemplation and deeds, [use] the rosary and the mind in relation to the dakini.
     Through to the rosary and the mind, a strong aspiration towards the guru is born, which eliminates the extremes of deeds. Because of this, the guru gives me a blessing based on the rosary and the mind with great love. Through to the rosary and the mind, zeal for practicing on the deity, devata, is born. Because of this, the devata, on the basis of the rosary and the mind, grants me the highest and ordinary siddhis. Through to the rosary and the mind, you forcefully encourage the dakini assembly to [perform] activities. ThThrough anks to this, the dakinis, by means of the rosary and the mind, carry out for me all the desired actions-activities.
     Just like using a rosary to bind together one by one brothers, sisters, Vajra relatives, friends, etc.With a rosary that does this, you do not depart from the obligations of the heart. And all the thoughts that become one through practice in one mandala and connection through the vajra thread, the rosary shows the unity of the mind [in all] as one.

     3. Divisions of the rosary
     Although many times explained, but in short, [there are] mandrikov rosary for peaceful actions. Accordingly, [there are] rosaries that are used by the mantrikas to gather magnifying, subduing acts, angry acts, intimidating, eliminating, dividing, and dispelling acts, destroying acts, and all other diverse actions. Those that differ from them [are also] rosaries of the outer, inner, secret, and absolute [levels].

     4. The enumeration of the Rosary
     The enumerations of the rosary [show] what should be accepted as useful and what should be discarded.

     First. Similar to such an enumeration of the rosary, accepted as necessary. [It is represented as follows]: reason, color, small or large size, number, beads for the rosary, the main bead, the method of counting.
     Reason. Reason. At best, [made] of jewelry. In the average case-the fruits of trees. In the usual case — a rosary made of wood, stones, nine small pieces of medicine. Conch shells are used for the rosary of pacification and for the mantras of pacifying activity. Rosaries of gold [are used] for acts of magnification. The coral rosary is used to perform acts of submission. Beads of iron and turquoise are [acceptable] for powerful deeds. Good for various acts [rosary beads] made of stone zi and agate. The fruit of the tree couroupita guianensis [fit] for peaceful acts. Fruits from parts of the peach are used when magnified. Soapwood particles are good for subjugating acts. For the nagas and Garudas, it is said about the rosary for powerful deeds made of thorny trees. For everything, good [beads made of] bodhi wood and bronze. [Beads made of] bodhi wood and close to gray [in color] - are good as beads of pacifying deeds. Those who possess the fruits of the mulberry tree, etc., are rosaries for performing magnifying acts. A rosary of sandal-wood and tamarisk are reported as a rosary for the implementation of subordinate acts. Of rosewood or having black thorns [are indicated as] trees for powerful [actions]. The rosary of the parlo tree [Tib. par lo] is proclaimed as [acceptable] for all acts. Earth pellets are [acceptable] for acts of appeasement. Rosary beads made of stone are good for magnification. The rosary of medicines is used to perform acts of submission. By means of rosaries made of great bones, such as the skull, etc., powerful deeds are performed. About the rosary, which is collected from a variety of [components], it is said: "All actions are carried out."
     The colors are seen like this. White is indicated for appeasing acts. The yellow color [used] in the rosary is for magnification. For submission, [use] red rosary beads. Black is indicated as a rosary for powerful actions. For all of the acts specified multi-colored beads.
     Additionally, a rosary made of wood is [acceptable] for appeasement. A rosary made of jewels [is] a rosary for performing the acts of magnification. Rosaries made of tree fruits are used to perform acts of submission. For the mighty [acts], a rosary made of great bones [i.e., a skull, etc.] is acceptable.
     The rosary for exile, separation, scattering, destruction, etc., is not specified here, as it appears in other texts. Acts are also performed with an ivory rosary. If we refer to the ornaments of the rosary, which are made of beautiful [things], then it is a rosary that is not defined in any way.
     These are the [descriptions] of the large or small [size of the beads]. For appeasement — the size of your own tooth. For magnification, it is only the size of a [thumbprint]. The rosary for submission is equal to the precious fruit. The rosary for powerful actions is equal to the [fingerprint] of the big toe. In any case, a rosary made of jewels, fruits of trees should correspond to its own size.
     This shows the lack of certainty in the eigenvalues. See above about the types of crafts. Discard those species that do not provide opportunities and appear as indeterminate species, being not clear.
     Explanation of the amount of [beads] for the rosary.
     Although in general it says about one hundred and eight, but it also says about half or fifty-four. Although they are guided by the twenty-seven and fourteen for all mantras in acts of appeasement, they adhere to the number eleven. One hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, one hundred thousand, etc. - correlates with texts that adhere to the value of an acceptable count for approximation.
     Also, one hundred and eight is used for pacification. For submission — the number is fifty-four. For mighty deeds, twenty-one. But in all cases [one must use] conformity with the tradition of one's own texts. Stick to the nearest approximation to the number. Don't do more or less of that by relying on four similar activities.
     This is the string for the rosary. [For acts] of appeasement — and-white woolen thread. Magnification-yellow cotton thread. The rosary for submission is tied with a red silk thread. Rosary of mighty deeds — dirty and impure [color] or also weave a large thread. Also, weaves of various types of leather and guts, various types of materials, similar to leather cords-are the threads of the rosary of various actions.
     Threads made of five-color fabric are acceptable when matching the holes of the rosary, which can be thin or thick. They should be neither too wide, nor too thin, nor too long, nor too large. Do not use in actions if they are very different [in length]. If they are too wide, you will come to a reduction, errors and obstacles. If long, it will be useless to practice, as the deity will move away. If very short, it will be harmful to longevity. They must be located next to each other and connected to each other. If there is no correspondence in the big and small, then there will be a decline. It is necessary to comprehend divisions that are similar to such, etc.
     These are the main beads of the rosary. Appeasement — white and spherical. The magnification is yellow and has protrusions. Also made from pieces of rhubarb with a stupa pattern. For submission — red color, in the form of a part or a piece of the moon. The oblong ones will also be good. For the powerful, the pieces are black, the shape of a triangle with a claw pattern. Or angular, with a forged hole. In short, it is sharp with rough [parts].
     The head beads for the rosary, which are used in various acts, refer to the seals of the body, speech, and mind. They are indicated as marked in white, red, and blue. Perform the analysis by knowing what corresponds to this method, etc.
     The method of counting
     First, for the rosary, perform the smoke offering, purification, blessing, and sanctification.
     To show the pride of the deity, take the rosary in your left hand. The main bead is located on the top.
     With the svabhava mantra to cleanse the void. Perform the rotation of the rosary circle, where the main rosary bead, which has emerged from the nature of emptiness, is the main devata himself. Perform the invocation of jnanasattva, capture and dissolve. Take the flowers in your right hand, recite the deity's mantra, the heart of interdependence, the Sanskrit vowels and consonants, and scatter them.
     In particular, repeat the mantra one hundred and eight times:
      oṁ ruci pra mardhanaye ratna māle dhara jñāna deva abhiṣīñca hūṁ svāhā
     Say so, etc. The grains of the syllables of the mantra have the color of all the actions performed. They fall like a rain of white, yellow, red, or green. They are dissolved in the rosary, being clearly represented as a deity. When they become one and non-dual, they will have their own nature of body, speech, and mind. Concentrate on the rosary beads, dissolving them in the light. Say best wishes and get involved with the acts.
     First, repeat one hundred and eight times three syllables. Then recite the Sanskrit vowels and consonants, the heart of interdependence, the rosary mantras twenty-one times, or as many times as you can. Then work hard in any recitation.
     Since this kind of rosary is not like most, it is important to have a heartfelt commitment, which appeared accordingly and are listed below. It will be good if you perform consecration from time to time.
     When you are guided by the mantras for pacification, perform the counting [in which the rosary is placed] on top of the index finger. Also when zooming in on top of the average. For submission on top of the nameless one. For the powerful, move the [rosary beads] over your little finger. When you do everything, in all cases, do not hold it with your right hand. But sometimes some people talk about using two hands, saying that you can also use both hands. In this case, you should either use both [hands], or not use only the right one.
     When [performing acts of] appeasement, count at the heart. For an increase at the level of the abdomen. For submission, the rosary is located at a secret place. Carry out the account with the intention of capturing. In the case of powerful [acts], it is necessary to be cross-legged and perform counting when [the rosary is] on top of the thigh. In the case of a variety of actions, do as it is convenient.
     These are the enumerations of the rosary, when acceptance and rejection are carried out by nature. The rosary on which the guru counted, being the foundation of faith and devotion, do not use for counting and keep it. If they do not correspond in any way to such, then do not keep or use the rosary of the deceased for counting. The rosary, kept and used by beings who have committed unprecedented [bad] actions, as well as by them [rosary] for counting vow breakers, bad families such as butchers, etc., murderers, lawbreakers who have rejected vows, widows, thieves-discard and do not use it as a rosary for counting.
     Give up and don't stick to the beads that are found by being thrown away by others or being scattered. Give up the rosary beads that are meant as ornaments and gifts to the deities, and the rosary beads that are received from those who have no power. Abandon those who have torn the thread, not the full number, through which passed animals, those marked by their teeth, those that had been damaged by fire and so damaged. [Why?] Because because of this, you can come to the elimination of vows in relation to the mantra. Give up and do not keep any of the beads that do not correspond to the mind of yoga and the beads that are not shown in the texts. In short, give up and do not keep any of the rosaries that are thrown away by others and used in acts of finding, etc.
     If the rosary that you keep yourself is approaching flaws, such as damage, etc., offer it to the deity of primordial wisdom in the fire hearth. Also bring water as an element. It is also acceptable to grant to brothers and sisters that are certain in one heartfelt commitment. Don't keep them yourself. In short, discard and do not keep any of the beads that do not correspond to the [described] nature.

     5. The necessity

     In the description of the importance of the need for the rosary, there are [three points]: general [need], particular and special.

     5.1 General necessity

     As one adheres to the heartfelt obligations of the mantra, the attributes and symbols of the deity of primordial wisdom, the dharani of good memory. As the great harm is explained, the interdependence of the Mother, the Prajna-paramita, the interdependence of things for enjoyment, causes, conditions, possibilities, and power is born. Because heartfelt commitment and primordial wisdom are mixed. Because you adhere to the [unity] of yourself and the manifestation of the deity. Because the inexhaustible fruit of the practitioner, the object of practice, and the practice itself increases. As recitation, approach, and thoughts are restored. Since all actions are carried out without exception, such as appeasing, increasing, etc. As the three cycles of [Teaching] turn, etc. Therefore, the concept of general necessity is not covered by the mind.

     5.2 Particular necessity

     Maintaining the value of the mantra count. You also adhere to the value based on the implementation of the account, which leads to the completion of various types of mantras, such as secret mantras, guidance mantras, dharani mantras, etc. For the sake of this [necessity] appears from the rosary, which is proportionate to the account. Therefore, a yogi who has a heartfelt commitment will adhere to the rosary that fixes the number. But even then, everything will be set because of quantity and comparability. For the sake of a measurement in the score that supports characteristics that do not relate to anything uncertain, stick to the rosary and the score. Show understanding about the importance of the key points.

     5.3 Special necessity

     It is similar to what is shown above. External rosaries adhere to the number and size. Thanks to the internal rosary, they are diligent in recitation. Thanks to the secret rosary, one attains the [realization] of the deities. Thanks to the rosary of the absolute level, they are mixed with the key instructions.
     For external rosaries, a base in the form of matter is used. With the internal rosary, you connect with the lips. Thanks to the secret rosary, you draw in the movement of the winds. [And the latter] are the rosaries of the attainment of the absolute level. But whatever they are, whether external, internal, or otherwise, connect with the space of the natural state, the primordial purity, rest in the essential nature of Samantabhadra.
     In the beginning, the rosary of diligence is important. In the middle, the rosary of steadfastness is important. At the end, the rosary of being in constant [balance] is important. Because of the importance of such general, particular, and special necessities, maturation, liberation, generation, and completion are established. Since they are special methods based on the gate leading to the path of the secret mantra, you will practice unity in interdependence. Through the primordial wisdom of the absence of giving and taking, you will turn the wheel of the three, the body of speech and the mind. Thanks to a single taste of happiness, suffering, etc., you will plunge into the key instructions that mix with non-duality. You will not be involved in any conditions. In accordance with the explanations about the enumeration of the rosary, rely on the deity, which is not usual, at any time of the day, night, etc.

     6. Heartfelt commitments

     All men who have a [corresponding] destiny and wish to attain unsurpassed enlightenment should adhere to [their] level through friendliness and lack of distraction from the heartfelt obligations of the deity and the mantra. Therefore, [it is necessary] to keep and not to move away, like the shadow of the body, from the only rosary that has such a nature. This is the root of the heart's commitment to the rosary. Although there are many heartfelt commitments, both primary and secondary, it is necessary to understand what corresponds to such brief [explanations]. There will be no reference to the other rosary beads of the one who is now keeping the vows. If you are not free from body heat [, that is, you are constantly used], then you will quickly implement any practice. Equally, do not pass it into the hands of others. In particular, it is important not to give into the hands of people who have a veil of damage to heart obligations or a person who does not have a single heart obligation. Do not be guided by empty and free hands, which are not timely when guided by periods of recitation. Do not measure yourself [with the rosary] for the sake of divination and calculation. Do not use or keep the rosary beads that are not sanctified in any way. The rosary, which has sanctification, do not use in other actions and keep it secret. Do not put it on the ground and do not scatter it, scattering it.
     Do not use or mix the rosary with inharmonious types of things, such as those with damage. Give up the rosary, where there is no harmony in small and large. Give up those that are scratched, cracked, undefined in quantity, not the appropriate color, bad in shape, unpleasant to the mind. Such are the heartfelt commitments to what is not worth keeping.
     Keep the rosary of deeds as a decoration. It is also acceptable to separate all other types of [rosary]. The rosary, which has a heartfelt commitment, should not come into contact with other [creatures], such as a dog, etc. Don't use [such rosary beads] as a gift for others. It is important to adhere only to the obligations that are not shown for the sake of protection.
     So, if the thread breaks, then quickly make it perfect, so that there is no break during the day. Do not keep it mixed up with inappropriate ways that do not correspond to the mantras in the acts. Similarly, give up the rosary beads that were under the feet of the horned animals. Refrain from rosaries marked with dampness and impurity. Do not give the rosary to people who do not have any heartfelt obligations. If you give [those who are not given] heartfelt obligations, then the siddhis will be damaged.
     According to the rosary, which corresponds to the external, internal or secret ways of [practicing] the mantra, what was hidden appears clearly. Keep with understanding through the three kinds of knowledge.
     The external rosary, which is an ornament, or commensurate with the account-set aside separately. Be guided by the inner rosary for any approach through the vastness [of space]. Keep the secret rosary between the body and the clothes, without referring to the time of practice and implementation of yogic deeds. Having the heartfelt commitments shown above, you will soon achieve the realization of all the desired actions.
     Since valuable rosaries, such as those made of jewels, etc., increase spiritual merit, keep them. But if someone else sees it, then there will be a decline. By cutting off the jewels, you will come to eliminate the obligations of the heart. Therefore, it is important to hide heartfelt commitments. Even if the rosary is very simple, do not adorn yourself with it, guided by it. After all, then [your obligations] can be discovered by others when they see it. Also [ask for] key points about hiding for heartfelt commitments.
     The heart's obligations are to keep the rosary, according to the method and type. The rosary for the deity is kept in vows. Do not deviate from the instructions that are shown in the tantras and texts of the guru. Thus, in the practice of yoga, one should understand the obligations of the heart. It is important to have these and other heartfelt commitments.
     Here the enumeration is briefly explained. If you want to know a detailed history, then understand it as arising from other tantras.
     Samaya.
     Padmasambhava, who is like me, [showed] taken from the tantras and oral instructions, this is the essence of the rosary for the sake of [the line] from the father, the mighty lord of the present, to the son, the followers that will appear in the future, and the essence of what is desired for those who come to the mantra.
     The interdependence of the teachings, causes, and conditions, on the basis of the interdependence of the two accumulations, methods, and wisdom, has possibilities for the fluctuation of the three worlds, and so on. Therefore, it manifests satisfaction in unshakeable purity for the follower of yoga. If you act according to the text, then there will also be something that corresponds to the method. In the stream of [being], qualities and clairvoyance will appear.
     Those who sow [postscript] in relation to the appearance of the fruit, [gain] reasons for obstacles and they will not have the essential fruit. What else is there to say about the attainment of primordial wisdom and deity? After all, nothing can be accomplished for a worldly demon. A yogi who does not possess a deity appears as not being a yogi, being ordinary. What else can such ordinary men say? Their leadership of the foundation of the Teaching is damaged and dispersed. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the cause and the fruit.
     Let there be understanding among the sons in future generations! Let the one who has a destiny meet!
     Samaya. Seal. Seal. Seal. Hidden seal. Seal of the trust. The seal of the treasury. Dhathim.
