Noble [teaching]. Explanation of the Good and Benefits of Giving


    I praise all the Enlightened ones and bodhisattvas!
    So I heard once.

    The Blessed One was in the garden of Anathapindada in the Jethavana Grove in Shravasti. Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikshu monks:
    Monks! The wise ones offer gifts in thirty-seven ways! What are these thirty-seven? To set aside greed, they offer gifts in faith. Gifts of time are offered. To offer gifts of the perfectly pure three matter-substances that are acceptable for giving by the Tathagatas. To discard all imperfections of the perturbations of the mind, the gifts of the realization of reverence are offered. To receive essence-substance from a body that has no heart-substance - gifts are offered from one's own hands. If they offer gifts that are not harmful to others, they obtain especially the elimination [of diseases and obstacles] when the [fruit of the deeds] is fully ripe. If they offer gifts with perfect color, they will find beautiful color [of the body] when [the fruit of the deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of perfect fragrance are offered, they will have a special fragrance of fame when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of perfect fragrance are offered, they will acquire the good attributes and marks by means of the highest fragrance when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of excellent taste are offered, they will acquire excellent wealth when they are fully ripe [fruit of deeds]. If they bring the most expansive gifts, they will have the most expansive wealth when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If they bring gifts of food, they will have full cutting off of hunger in all their lives at full maturity [of fruit of deeds]. If they bring gifts of drink, they will find complete cutting off of thirst in all lives at full maturity [of fruit of deeds]. If they offer gifts of clothes, they will have a variety of riches from clothes at full maturity [of fruit of deeds]. If gifts of residence are offered, they shall have a country, a joyful garden, a park, an immeasurable palace, a house, a porch, a storehouse, a balustrade when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If they bring gifts of cloths for a bed, they will have a large family when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of carts and horses are offered, they will gain four legs of magical powers at full maturity [of fruit of deeds]. If gifts of medicines are offered, they will gain absence of old age and death, nirvana, which suppresses sorrow and obscurations-claws, when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of doctrine are offered, they will have remembrance of births when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of flowers are offered, they will obtain the flowers of the branches of enlightenment when they are fully ripe [fruit of deeds]. If gifts of necklaces-hirlands are offered, they will obtain perfect purity [freedom from] impurities of desire, anger, and stupidity when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If the gifts of incense are offered, they attain the absence of all the bad odors of the omens-kleshas when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If the gifts of umbrellas are offered, they attain [the level of] the lord who is mighty in teaching when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If the gifts of bells are offered, they shall attain melody pleasing to the mind, when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If they offer the gifts of cymbals, they shall have [speech that sounds] like the melody of Brahma, when [the fruit of acts] is fully ripe. If the gifts of oil lamps are offered, they shall attain perfect purity, absence of veils, and the divine eye when [the fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If they offer the gifts of silk, they will obtain a bandage of silk of complete liberation, [being] among people and gods, with the full ripening [of the fruit of deeds].
    [Follow] the path of offering saffron as oil before the stupa of the Tathagata or the image of the bodily form of the Tathagata. If you offer water for fragrant ablutions when you are poor, you will attain eighty good attributes and thirty-two marks of the great being when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If the gifts of pure things are offered, at the full maturity [of the fruit of deeds] in all the lives will attain little disease, birth in the highest family, splendor in all things. If the gifts of the five hearts-essentials are offered, then with full maturation [the fruit of acts] in all births they will gain great strength and no hindrance to great happiness. If they give as a gift abiding in love, they will find absence of harmful mind in full ripening [fruit of deeds]. If one offers as a gift abiding in compassion-compassion, one will find absence of harm in full maturity [fruit of deeds]. If they offer as a gift - abiding in joy, they will gain the gift of fearlessness when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If they offer as a gift - abiding in equilibrium, they will get the gift of discarding lack of joy when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If gifts of various aspects are offered, they will gain various riches when the [fruit of deeds] is fully ripe. If one offers as a gift the abiding absence of hope of receiving [something], one will attain unsurpassed, truly perfect enlightenment when the [fruit of acts] is fully ripe.
    Monks! The wise make offerings of thirty-seven kinds of gifts.
    The Blessed One said so. The bhikshu monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
