The ritual of the ten trainings
Acharya, please think [of me]! This <name> starting from this time until he arrives at the heart of enlightenment, he takes refuge in the all-seeing, all-knowing Blessed One, the Enlightened One, the highest among bipeds! Likewise, I take refuge in the Teaching, the highest among all that are free from passion! I take refuge in the Good Assembly, the highest among assemblies!
Thus say three times two times each. This is the ritual of going to refuge.
Acharya! Please think [of me]! This <name> starting from this time until the Sun rises tomorrow - again abstain from all cutting off of life, all stealing of other people's jewels, impure behavior, false speech, wine from cereals, brewed wine, that which causes intoxication, state of immorality, untimely eating, lofty sitting, great sitting, songs and dances, sounds of music, garlands, perfume, wearing jewelry and colored [clothes]! I will practice following the training of the noble ones and arhats! I will practice following the practice of the noble ones.
I ask the acharya to support me in abiding in purification and restoration for the sake of the adornment of the mind, for the sake of the things of the mind, for the sake of fully acquiring the essence of the Enlightened One as the supreme goal!
Similarly, say three times two times each. Such is the ritual of the eight branches of one-day [fasting] and the vows of restoration and purification [sojong, poshadha].
Acharya, please think [of me]! This <name> from this time onward until he arrives at the heart of enlightenment, as far as possible, renounces the cessation of life, turns away from the cessation of life. Likewise one turns away from taking what is not given, perverted intercourse due to desire, false speech, slander, coarse words, incoherent speech, greedy mind, harmful mind, false view!
In like manner, say three times two times each. Such is the ritual of the ten trainings.
