The Practice of Noble Maitreya
I prostrate myself before the holy Maitreya!
After meditating on emptiness as described earlier, [visualize] a multicolored lotus and a moon disc. On them sits [a deity] with legs crossed in the bodhisattva position. It has three faces, three times three eyes, and four arms. On the right and left are black and white faces. The central face is golden in color, being very yellow. The first two arms form the [mudra] of explanation of the Teaching. With the right and left hands, it forms the mudra of supreme giving and holds a bundle of open nag tree flowers. It has a form adorned with various decorations. Meditate thus on the essence in the form of the protector Maitreya. Make a fist, binding your fingers together. Place your index fingers on the middle of your thumbs. When you have formed the shape of a flower, then recite the mantra:
oṁ mai maitri maitriye svāhā
Thus concludes the practice of the noble Maitreya, composed by the great Kashmiri pandita Shakya Shrī Bhadra. Translated by translator Jampa Pal.
