The Noble [teaching]. The Sutra of the Great Chariot. The Seven Enlightened Ones.

Prostrate myself before all the Enlightened ones and bodhisattvas!
    That's what I heard once.

The blessed one was very close to the place of practice of the rishis in the world of gods on the top of Mount Kailash. With him [was] a Blessed Assembly of monks, numbering five hundred, and five hundred bodhisattvas, among whom were bodhisattva-mahasattva Maitreya, bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha, Samantabhadra, Anatakusuma, Sumantakusuma, and other bodhisattvas that were attached to only one birth.
Then the Blessed One, being seized by the appearance of the monks in this forest on the mountain top, rose up and [turned into a man] with hands without clothes and a naked ascetic. He wept and looked [at them].
Then the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha, freeing one shoulder from his robes, lowered himself to the ground with his right knee. He knelt down and bowed before the Blessed One with his palms folded. And he said the following to the Blessed One:
Blessed One! [You have revealed] the sounds of sorrow in the midst of the heavenly space. The monks [ask] one another in prayers about the unclothed hands and the naked [ascetic, saying], What is this?
Then the Blessed One said the following to the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha:
Akashagarbha! This is the mark of sickness. This one and the other are also marked by disease.
Then the bodhisattva-mahasattva said the following to the Blessed One:
I ask the Blessed One to clarify how to completely pacify all diseases, what is the mantra of guidance for discarding all bhuti.
    Said thus, asking.
Then the Blessed One manifested as the Enlightened One. Then six Tathagatas arose in celestial space. The seventh was the Blessed One, Tathagata Shakyamuni.
Then the Tathagata Vipashyin positioned himself above in celestial space. And for the purpose [of] benefiting all sentient beings, for the complete pacification of all diseases, for the discarding of all bhuti elements - uttered these bases of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya tadyathā oṁ hala hala hila hilāya namo jagana micanāya namo namaḥ svāhā

Then the Tathagata Vipashyin said the following to the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha:
Akashagarbha! If one keeps this mantra of maintenance, recites, studies everywhere, his body will have no harm from weapons. There will not come a time of death because of sickness from the affliction of water or fire. There will not come a time of death because of untimely death. Even if he eats poison, it will become like food.
Say it seven times over the food and drink. If you eat it, there will be no external harm. You will not be marked by all diseases. You will live a long time. You will adhere to learning. You will see the bodily forms of the seven Tathagatas. When you perform repetition at the ear that has been cut off by weapons, the oil of muscat will be bestowed. When marked by diseases of leprosy and tumors, make an oil by mixing the oil of nutmeg, blue lotus, coriander seed, and asparagus. If you do so, you will cure all diseases. Also bind yourself with all deeds.

Then the Tathagata Shikkhin settled down in the celestial space above. And for the purpose of [bringing] benefit to all sentient beings, for the complete pacification of all diseases, for the discarding of all bhuti - recited these bases of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya oṁ paca paca pācaya pācaya sarva bhūtā nāṁ cchindhaya kīlaya vara vidyā nāṁ svāhā

Akashagarbha! For the purposes of benefiting all beings, of completely pacifying all diseases, of discarding errors in meditation and bad dreams, of suppressing untimely death - [this mantra] has been proclaimed by many myriads of Enlightened ones. I will also clarify it now. Adhere to this heart.
Akashagarbha! If one performs this heart of mine three times in his mind during the day, he will not be harmed by external [conditions]. One will see the bodily form of the Tathagata when he falls asleep while falling asleep. One will not die in bad circumstances. Dying thereafter, he will meet the Tathagata and be satisfied.
Then [follows] another such ritual. Since one is entangled in all diseases, one is present with fetters. When thou hast performed the acts of gathering [all], utter [the mantra] over the oil of muscat and offer it. Directions will be bound by water. With threads thou shalt protect thyself. With blue threads thou shalt bind provocations for children. Recite seven times over the ear that is cut off by the weapon. Also bind with your own mind and with other [actions].

Then the Tathagata Vishwabhu settled in the celestial space above. And for the purpose of [bringing] benefit to all living beings, for the sake of complete pacification of all diseases, for the sake of discarding all bhuti - uttered these bases of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya oṁ kala kala kili kili kulu kulu kulota sādhanā nāṁ kuru sarva grahā ṇāṁ svāhā

Akashagarbha! This is the foundation of the secret mantra proclaimed by all the past, future and present Tathagatas of the good ages. I will also clarify it now.
Akashagarbha! Thou shalt adhere to these foundations of the secret mantra. If one keeps, reads, analyzes everywhere, his body will not be damaged by weapons. Will not be damaged by poisons. Will not be damaged by poisons from jewels. Will not appear contagious diseases. Will not die by water, by untimely death, in a bad place. Will not be subject to the veils of deeds of the past.
Any monk or nun, virtuous layman or laywoman, wash their hair when they rise in the morning. If one recites one hundred and eight times [the mantra] before the Tathagata, all the veils of their deeds will be purified. All beings who have angered them will speak of them as the original kings. All beings will be subject to them. Be able to act with the mind, [abiding] within fears. In all wars, conflicts, disputes, squabbles will be entangled with white threads.
When sicknesses of the eyes, make an ointment of milky wood and anoint on the ears. When you wish to paralyze enemies, recite a hundred and eight times [the mantra] over air rice, mixed with yogurt and honey. Then do the burning of the gifts.

rājā nāṁ rājā mā trambā vaśīkara tu kāmena

And perform the burning of the gifts [with the repetition of the mantra] a thousand times over the sesame seeds and the firewood of the milky wood burned in the place of burning.
If you wish to purify your veils and the veils of all living beings, to purify everything harmful, to achieve great glory and receive a lot of jewels, then perform the burning of gifts [with repeating mantra] a thousand times over sesame and milkwood burned in the place of burning.
If you wish to purify all pernicious things, whatever they may be, wish to perform all the mantras of the conduct, wish to purify yourself, wash with a mixture of coriander seed, hibiscus, millet, acacia syris, tagar, saffron, round-headed hillock, indrawaruna, bodhi tree, the top of the mango tree. For one day before the Enlightened, prepare a feast and place a vase on the ground. On the full moon, perform ablution before the image of the Enlightened One, reciting the thousand and eight times [mantra].
Since you do not wish to be poisoned by poisons, in front of the Enlightened One invite by name [with the repetition of] one hundred and eight mantras, placing a teak spoon on your tongue. If you do the burning of the gifts, you will not be poisoned by poisons. If you also act, binding with all actions with regard to provocations, protections, elements, etc., you will abide in happiness.

Then the Blessed One, the Tathagata Krakuchchanda settled down in the celestial space above. And for the purpose [of] benefiting all sentient beings, for the complete pacification of all diseases, for the discarding of all bhuti elements - uttered these bases of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya namaḥ krakucchandāya tathāgatāya arhate saṁmyaksaṁ buddhāya oṁ kaṭa kaṭa kaṭha kaṭha kiṭi kiṭi kiṭhi kiṭhi kiṭāpaya namaḥ svāhā

Akashagarbha! Thou shalt adhere to this joyful heart and proclaim [equal to] the myriad grains of sand of the Ganges "Tathagata, arhat, the truly perfect Enlightened Krakuchchanda. Receive, keep, comprehend everywhere. If you do so, you will be as pure as a monk or nun, a virtuous layman or laywoman in later life. Having found faith in the Three Jewels, perform ablutions. Then offer the Blessed One a flower, incense, and fragrant water and repeat this secret mantra one hundred and eight times. Then you will remember the lineage of life through seven lifetimes.
You will find the essence of divine greatness among the gods. You will also become a Chakravartin among men. Also, if you act according to the ritual, you will receive so the last birth as a human being. When you die thereafter, you will be born in Sukhavati, the realm of creation. If you repeat the ritual constantly in this life, you will be free from all diseases, you will adhere to the teachings. Say it seven times over food and drink. If you then eat or drink, you will be free from all diseases. So, if thou wilt have a drink, purify with one thousand and eight mantras all the food. If thou shalt cut off the appearing diseases, use a copper needle. If you will free yourself from all scandals, conflicts, fetters, then, repeat seven times. If you do this, also the jewels will increase all the time. You will also free yourself from all hindrances and negative forces.
Also, if you wish to see the Tathagata, place the mandala on the ground in the circle of the universe in its pure direction. Having done so, fume the aloe. When you have said it a thousand and eight times, look in the eastern direction, which is close to him. If you fall asleep, you will see the Tathagata. Everything will be shown to the mind in the smallest particles. All lives, strengths, victories and defeats will also be shown.

Then Tathagata Kanakamuni positioned himself in the celestial space above. And for the purpose of [bringing] benefit to all sentient beings, for the complete pacification of all diseases, for the discarding of all bhuti elements - uttered these bases of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya namaḥ kanakamunaye tathāgatāya arhate saṁmyaksaṁ buddhāya tadyathā oṁ sara sara sara sara siri siri siri siri sirāya dhama dhama dhama dhama dhuma dhuma dhuma dhumāya namo namaḥ kanakamunaye tathāgatāya arhate saṁmyaksaṁ buddhaya svāhā

Then Tathagata Kanakamuni told the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha this heart:
Akashagarbha! Anyone who adheres to this heart and constantly repeats it will have no fear of weapons. Nor will there be time for the appearance of death by fire, water, or falling lightning. Nor will there be an opportunity for [harm] from all poisons that correspond to food. Nor will there be formed a time of death by reason of untimely demise. There will be no death by reason of bad properties. There will be longevity. Welfare will be great. Will constantly meet the Tathagata. The Tathagata will bless.  If you perform proclamation-recitation in the three times, you will purify all the veils of deeds of the past. But if you wish to be liberated from external diseases, offer as much torma as you can, light incense from kundura or aloe. Also purify all food.
For leprosy, tumors, and enlargement of the liver, mix honey with a bandage of soft aire. If, having done so, you anoint after reciting one thousand eight mantras before the Blessed-Enlightened One, you will cure all leprosy.
For four days, recite one thousand and eight times [the mantra] over a garland of jasmine flowers in front of the Blessed-Enlightened One. If you then tie it on a person's head, he will be cured of contagious diseases in four days. If you recite over the ears cut off by a weapon, you will free from forgetfulness. For those seized by the demons of rotting corpses, burn [as incense] flowers offered to the Enlightened One. When one performs such acts, etc., one speaks of the realization of all deeds.

Then Tathagata Kashyapa seated himself in the space above and for the sake of [realizing] the purposes [of] benefiting all beings, realizing the complete pacification of all diseases, discarding all elements-bhuti - proclaimed such a foundation of the secret mantra:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya oṁ hara hara hara hara ha ha ha namaḥ kāśyapāya tathāgatāya arhate saṁmyaksaṁ buddhāya siddhyantu mantra pāda svāhā

Then Tathagata Kashyapa said the following to the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha:
Akashagarbha! This - was proclaimed equal to the number of the sand grains of the thirty-two rivers of the Ganges by the Enlightened and the Blessed.
Akashagarbha! Thou also adherest to this heart. Comprehend, maintain for all, recite, exercise comprehension. If you repeat three times by day and three times by night, in short, you will also see the Tathagata in your dreams. You will also purify all the veils of deeds, whatever deeds you associate with in the past.
Bind thyself also with all acts.
[For diseases] leprosy, diseases of the flesh, etc. - recite a thousand and eight times [the mantra] before the Enlightened One over the flower given to the Enlightened One. If you recite and perform an ablution, you will be cured.
For diseases of the brain, place the flower given by the Enlightened One in front of the Enlightened One. Say the [mantra] before the Enlightened One thousand and eight times. Also connect with all [actions].

Then the Blessed One, Tathagata Shakyamuni sat in the space above. And with the purpose [of] benefiting all beings, uttered this mantra of knowledge:

namo buddhāya namo dharmāya namaḥ saṁghāya tadyathā ghume ghume mahā ghume tale tale mahā tale cale cale mahā cale dhure dhure mahā dhure tiri tiri mahā tiri kili kili mahā kili curu curu mahā curu mili mili mahā mili tili tili mahā tili dhume dhume mahā dhume cale cale mahā cale khiri khiri mahā khiri cili cili mahā cili svāhā

Then the Blessed One, the Tathagata, Shakyamuni said the following to the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha:
Akashagarbha! If you eliminate diseases of the brain, use the weapons and the palms of your hands. If you ward off clouds, use the sprig of the caravira tree. If cleansing poisons, use water. Do the same for other actions. Bind yourself [to actions] through the rituals of ablution. By means of all rituals thou shalt connect with all [actions].
The blessed one said so. Then the bodhisattva-mahasattva Akashagarbha rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
Thus concludes the noble [teaching], the sutra of the great chariot, "The Seven Enlightened Ones." Translated by Karma Paljor (O.E. Filippov).
