ārya-catuṛ-dharma-kaṁ-nāma-mahāyāna-sūtra
The Noble [teachings]. Sutra of the Great Chariot. Four teachings.
Prostrate myself before all the Enlightened ones and bodhisattvas!
So I heard once.
The Blessed One was with a great Blessed Assembly of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks in the Jethavana Garden, the pleasure grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. There was also [there] a large assembly of bodhisattvas.
Then the Blessed One said the following to the monks:
Monks! A bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he is alive, will not give up these four teachings completely for the sake of living. Which four?
Monks! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he lives, will not completely abandon the enlightened attitudes for the sake of life.
Monks! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he lives, will not give up completely for the sake of life a virtuous friend.
Monks! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he lives, will not completely abandon patience and nobility for the sake of life.
Monks! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he lives, will not give up completely for the sake of life the abiding in hermitage.
Monks! The bodhisattva-mahasattva, as long as he lives, will not completely abandon these four teachings for the sake of life.
The blessed one said so, Sugata said so. Then the other teachers also said so. Let the sage not discard the essence of omniscience with his mind and engender a perfect enlightened attitude! Let him [abide] in a peculiar state in the power of patience and nobility. May virtuous friends not be completely discarded. Let the sage who has destroyed and discarded [everything], like the king who split the mountain, constantly rely on a solitary place. If he constantly abides with special [strength] in these teachings, he will become enlightened in enlightenment, having destroyed the demons-mara.
The blessed one said this. Everyone around him, including monks and bodhisattvas, rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
Thus concludes the noble [teaching], the sutra of the Great Chariot called the Four Teachings.
