Noble [teaching]. Sutra of the Great Chariot. The Sutra of Gold.
I praise to all the Enlightened Ones and bodhisattvas!
This is what I heard once.
The Blessed One was in the garden of Anathapindada in the Jetavana grove in Shravasti At that time, the venerable Ananda addressed the Blessed One, saying the following:
Blessed One! What is the enlightened mood?
The Blessed One replied:
Honorable Ananda! The enlightened mood is to be perceived as being like gold in its own nature. Gold by its own nature is perfectly pure. Similarly, the enlightened mindset also abides in perfect purity by its own nature.
Even if the smith separates the different parts while working with gold, the intrinsic nature of gold does not change. Similarly, even if diverse and special qualities manifest in the enlightened mood, [they] are not separated from the enlightened mood [truth level] of the absolute level. Therefore the intrinsic nature [of it] is unchanging.
Then the Blessed One said the following verse:
The essence of the enlightened mood is perfect purity.
Be diligent in [achieving] your own goals and the goals of others.
Meditate on the unreal as the essence.
Trust in the cause of the appearance of wisdom.
The Blessed One said thus. Those around, together with the venerable Ananda, the universe together with gods, humans, asuras and gandharvas - rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.
Thus ends the noble [teaching], the Sutra of the Great Chariot, the Sutra of Gold.
